Special Derivatives of the Skin

The skin is the largest organ of the body. The skin protects us from microbes and the elements, helps regulate body temperature and permits the sensation of touch, heat and cold. The derivatives of skin include sweat glands, sebaceous glands, and mammary glands, hair follicles and nails.

Sweat glandThese are the glands that secrete sweat . These glands are also called as sudorific glands and are distributed over most of the body surface.

Sebaceous glandsA gland of the skin that secretes an oily substance, sebum, usually into a hair follicle near the surface of the skin. Sebaceous glands are located throughout the skin except in the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.

Mammary glandsA mammary gland are the glands that secrete milk. This milk is used to feed young ones.

Hair  : Hair primarily serves for protection , warmth and sensation. Human hair is made of keratin. Hair growth occurs from the hair follicle.
